Human Trafficking Awareness for Young Professionals

During my undergrad at Ryerson University, I had focused all my attention to learning about logistics, planning and programming. Little did I know, there was an underlying issue within the industry. Human Trafficking is a topic that was rarely discussed in my education let alone the industry until as of late. With the emergence of Meeting Professionals Against Human Trafficking (MPAHT), I became aware of how this affects our industry and how participating in discussions can help bring awareness to this social issue. In this article, I will explain the importance of identifying human trafficking at our conferences, meetings and events along with ways to be aware of issue as the emerging work force in the industry.

The Unknown in Now the Known

Have you ever wondered how can we ever find out what traffickers are doing behind the scenes? That was my first question! But it turns out, there are many ways to find out how to identify solicitors and victims, including many under the age of 18. It is extremely crucial to identify signs of human trafficking which can save the lives of the many that are perpetrated. Many of the victims who are abducted, have a slim chance of escape and it is live-saving choices that employees can make with small signs of evidence. Over time, as an industry, we have accepted the myth that human trafficking is an issue that does not pertain to many of us and it cannot be easily identified. However, with the increasing conversations of human trafficking, we are improving awareness and identification which is essentially saving the lives of victims, including many children.

Front Line Jobs Have the Biggest Opportunity for Change & Reporting

We have a commitment within the hospitality and tourism industry to ensure the safety, security and well-being of all our guests worldwide. As recent graduates, we work in front-line jobs which have to biggest influence and opportunity to identify certain signs. I have worked in housekeeping, banquets and reservations and this information is invaluable. With the impact of human trafficking in Canada, this information should be taught in our education and have specific training. We can become better meeting and event professionals who can spot and identify human trafficking within hotels and venues where we host our events.

Collaboration with Toronto Police Services, Meeting Professionals International and Women’s International Network have allowed the expansion of programming, awareness and building strategic plans to alleviate the issue. There is growing network of industry professionals with a variety of experiences and expertise who are willing to share information with students entering the industry. Networking is how I found out about the amazing organization! I look forward to supporting this amazing cause and share my knowledge with colleagues entering the industry today. Below are five ways to help!
